I really liked this book. It was a great read, it had a great flow to it. It was great to hear the other side of mountaineering and climbing. It incorporated a lot of different people's views and was definitely a different view of mountaineering and climbing that no one really talks about or sees.

I liked this book a lot . I have both read and listened to it. I enjoyed both. The audio is better. I think it is definitely worth the time of anybody, male or female.

The book itself is fascinating, and offers an unusual perspective on high-altitude mountaineering. However it's spoiled by the appalling print quality of this edition. It looks like a poor-quality photocopy, and some pages are so bad as to be almost illegible. I highly recommend the book, but if you can find another edition then do so!

Written from a completely different perspective. Filled in some gaps. Good to see the other side of climbers lives, even when that climber has been lost.

I've read many, many books on mountaineering, and I wasn't sure if this might not be a bit maudlin, but I was very pleasantly surprised. Maria Coffey has written a clear-eyed, compelling book about the experiences of those who love mountaineers, as well as a intimate look at what compels athletes who are addicted to such a dangerous sport. Well worth the read.

This book spells out the extreme effect on the loved ones left behind during the time the climber is away. To love a climber and have a relationship, marriage, children with, one needs to face the price one will pay.... Those left behind have their unsung extreme climbs to do.

This book may help heal some of the wounds from climbing. Maria did a wonderful job researching and writing this story. It continues where some of the classic books of climbing left off, giving the reader a behind the curtain look at what happened after the climbs. It may also give comfort to climbers that there are other people out there will similar feelings and a willingness to engage in Deep Play. It may send some of us back into the mountains by letting us know it is okay to "feed the rat" when it is hungry. (and for some it is always hungry)

This book discussed the psyche of high-altitude climbers and how their actions affect their loved ones. Very interesting and unlike anything I've read about mountain climbing.

As a new member of the B&H/Lifeway bloggers (free!), I received a complimentary copy of this book to review and was immediately struck by its quality - nice hardcover, thick shiny pages, and a ribbon book marker.Despite these pleasant features, my delight turned to dismay when I realized that the illustrations from classical paintings are neither acknowledged by title and artist, nor are they at all representative of the 31 women whom they're supposed to portray. As I said in the longer review on my blog, almost every beautiful painting used as an illustration in this book shows tones from stark white to ruddy skin but does not feature women who look like theyâ€™re from countries in Africa or the Middle East. Although my own skin is close to stark, I still resent this too-common misrepresentation of Bible people.I also take issue with the bookâ€™s perspective. According to the Introduction, 31 Women of the Bible offers a "concise summary of each womanâ€™s appearance in Scripture, viewed through the lens of our modern culture.â€ But, don't we already see through contemporary cultural lenses and, therefore, automatically do that as we read? What we do not see is why people did what they did in a specific time and place with concerns and conditions unlike our own. I wish the book gave us this type of insight.A womanâ€™s insight would be welcomed, too, as â€œThe Takeawayâ€ and questions asked are not ones I think about or particularly want to know.Since Iâ€™ve agreed to give a review in exchange from my complimentary copy, I have to do something I donâ€™t normally do â€“ give the book 3 stars. My personal preference is to only review books I can happily give 4 or 5 stars to, so Iâ€™m feeling bad about this and donâ€™t want to discourage the author in his work. Besides, I think this book makes an interesting one-month devotional to help readers see how human nature hasnâ€™t changed, nor has our need for God. Each woman portrayed comes with a unique personality and strong character from which we can learn more about ourselves or the women in our lives.Iâ€™d most recommend this book, though, as a 31-week (or more) guide for a Bible discussion group where members are encouraged to read the text, consider the questions prior to meeting, and feel free to add their own. Then, oh, what lively discussions would most likely occur!

Not only does the author share details of who they were and what they did in life, but he also gives the reader a greater understanding of what they may have been going through on the inside. He does this by providing detailed information about their lives and the circumstances they experienced, scripture references, and my favorite part, a "Takeaway" section that is offered at the end of each individual biography. Upon reading these sections, I would sometimes find myself rethinking what I thought I knew about a few of the people mentioned. It was definitely an eye opener!The book also includes a section called, "Food for Thought." This area offers several afterthought questions that readers can further expand their character studies with. Sometimes the questions involve circumstances in that person's life, while other times they are questions directed to the actual reader. This allowed me to sometimes put myself in their shoes and see circumstance through their eyes. There is a note from the author in the beginning that mentions the hope that each reader will "be challenged, encouraged, warned, and helped." I personally felt that this book definitely accomplished these tasks.Every time I read one of the biographies, I felt this insistent need to keep going, so that I can learn more about the rest of the women included. This is probably one of the more remarkable Biblical character guides that I've personally read. The text also offers a more concise, down-to-earth writing style that definitely kept me engaged. This is a book that can be read from front to back, or in different settings as a Bible study. The pretty blue ribbon bookmark is a handy feature that allows me to keep my place. There are also a ton of beautiful full-color illustrations throughout that really help bring each woman's story to life. I received an advance review copy of this book to readâ€“all views expressed here are unbiased and purely those of my own.

Overall reading short snippets about different women mentioned in Scripture was interesting. Some of the written snippets were written better than others, and each included three questions to ponder. When I read a book like 31 Women of the Bible, I try to remain open to glean the nuggets of wisdom that seem to leap off the page. The questions to me ranged from helpful to thinking the questions were not pointing to the deeper meaning of the womenâ€™sâ€™ lives they were sharing.One could read this within a short amount of time or use it as part of their devotion time. My suggestion would be to always read from the Bible anything about the woman being portrayed in the book before reading the dayâ€™s snippet. A book like this is a good way to introduce women of the Bible in a way that hopefully launches people to look to how these women point to God or Jesus.There were a couple of snippets that were written in a way that seemed to not focus seriously on the woman or what she experienced. I personally didnâ€™t care for the misrepresentation of what the women may have looked like as they seemed to be of European descent and these were women far removed from those portraits included in the book. As long as one reads looking for what God may be speaking to them, then one will come away with something to ponder on. But donâ€™t stop there, look at a concordance to find any reference in Scripture about these women to get an accurate portrayal of who there were, where they lived or what their lives were like historically.

This is a pretty serious book. It's well written and easy enough to read but the author goes into great detail on this subject. Prior to reading this book I never reaized how much there was to know about using histograms to improve your photography..Overall I would say that this is one of the most useful books I've read on any sort of photography technique. I am already looking at two more of his books.

This book explains the finer points of histograms, a tool that most photographers don't ever utilize. Even though it is well written, it will probably take two or three readings for it all to sink in. However, once you learn to use the histogram, your exposures even under the most difficult circumstances will be much more accurate. Anyone with a DSLR camera should learn to use the histogram to improve their photography. As primarily a wildlife and nature photographer, I found this book easy to read and a valuable addition to my photographic arsenal. Lots of examples to analyze. Well done Al.

One of a kind book covering exclusively one only aspect of photography - exposure histograms.Though author features this book as a tool necessary for an experienced film photographers that switched to modern digital photography - this is not the point.The book will be useful for anyone who wants to add such valuable tool as exposure histograms to theirs arsenal.It is difficult to perceive some points of a particular topic but overall it's much better than reading an obvious for experienced photographers things.Overall, book gives perfect understanding for what is histograms in photography, what are they for, their types and how to read and use them.I do not regret spending 4 bucks on this book.

I found this book to be very informative regarding the purpose of the histogram and how I can use it for better pictures . I wish that it was a little more in depth and how to use it backwards and forwards between the LCD screen while on manual mode with my camera. I would like to know if I can adjust the histogram on the LCD screen prior to taking the picture or if there is anything else on my camera dials that I can use to watch the histogram I just for my picture. I would recommend this book for anyone who really wants to understand how to take good pictures and use the histogram as a guide. I will be going back to this book again for reference when I have questions regarding the histogram .

This book is a good introduction to the use of histograms, it covers the need for using histrograms, how colours are used in digital photography, how to read a histogram, and analyses a few photos, their histograms and why different patterns make good photos.It is easy to understand with few technical terms, all of which are clearly explained at their first use and in the glossary at the end of the book. It uses repetition to make sure that you fully understand the points but the only repetition that is really noticable is the mention that reptition is being used.This book is really aimed at the photographer who isn't familiar with the use of histograms, whether or not you are an experienced film or digital photographer, and is an excellent introduction. It is also useful for those who know a little about histograms but would like to be more confident with them. In either case this book will help you to take better photos, and to process photos better using digital editing software, but if you are experienced and comfortable using histograms you probably won't get much from this book.

This book is definitely worth the reasonable price for which it is being sold. It explains histograms quite well, from both a technical and historical perspective. As Judge explains, this tool that seems unique to digital photography is a natural extension if the zone system out forth by Ansel Adams. He goes on to explain exactly what information is and is not conveyed in a histogram. My one criticism is that he does not explain much about how histograms are modified by common post processing tools. I would have really appreciated a chapter that explained how tools in photoshop or lightroom, such as adjusting contrast, saturation, vibrance, and even exposure impact the histogram.

The book provides good information about histograms, but is very repetitive, which the author also acknowledges upfront. The font is large (you won't need your glasses to read). I'm not sure what the purpose of the blank pages is (to add weight?). There are several pages with histogram examples, but I was expecting more info on how to actually use histograms in post processing (Photoshop etc.) to improve color and tonality. Some images with the corresponding histograms simply say "after quick edit" and "after extensive editing". I would like to know more how the histogram was used to get there. Well, I guess I have to look elsewhere.

This is exactly the book I needed to better understand the benefits of consulting photo histograms in their various forms without wading through dense technical information. This author has boiled down the topic and presented it in easy-to-understand language. Most valuable to me was his explanation of the differences between in-camera histograms and histograms used in post-processing. Finally, someone has unlocked for me their tremendous potential value for quickly analyzing and appraising images from capture to display. Thank you, Al Judge!

Excellent Resource

I found BizTalk 2013 EDI for Health Care to be an excellent resource to help explain how BizTalk could benefit our organization, using a real-world process as an example. The writing style and content was very business-user friendly, not bloated with technical jargon. It is not a BizTalk "cookbook", but fit my needs perfectly.

The author, Mark Beckner has an excellent way of exploring real world situations. Adapting his examples to my tasks has proven to be extremely helpful. The value received from this book is worth the price. I would recommend any of Mark's books.

See my other review for the supply chain management. It's a very small book and I did not know that before I had my employer buy it
