Firstly, I would like to preface with the fact that I am NOT following a keto diet, so I don't have as much knowledge as hardcore keto-ers who have been dedicated to the lifestyle for a while. However, I think I've done enough research to write this review with some confidence.I'm giving the book 3 stars because, overall, the recipes look healthy and delicious (I have yet to make anything since I only received the book today, but it looks promising). Each smoothie has nutrition facts including calories, carbs, protein, fat, sugar, sodium, and fiber, which I'm sure a lot of people will find handy.I only give it 3 stars though, because:1. The introduction is poorly written/edited with a lot of grammatical errors. I know this is a recipe book, not an English language textbook, so I can sort of overlook that part. But it still comes across as unprofessional.More than that, there's a section in the introduction that just seems snide and unnecessary. Quote: '. . . you need to be diligent in picking the foods you eat . . . to lose all those belly fat, love handles, muffin top, arm flabs and all those nook and crannies . . .' I'm sure that the author wasn't scheming to offend people by calling them out on their 'muffin tops' and 'arm flabs,' but again, it just seems unprofessional.2. Onto the recipes themselves. While they do look tasty, some of the recipes don't look very keto-friendly. For anyone confused, I'll TRY to keep my explanation short: Keto is a low-carb diet carefully balancing macronutrients in order to achieve and maintain a fat-burning state known as ketosis, usually around 70% fats, 25% protein, and 5% carbohydrates (though that can vary among individuals). My understanding is that the baseline for following keto is to have 20g of carbs per day. Some people claim to eat more than that based on bio-individuality, but there are many keto evangelists who religiously maintain that 20g of carbs is THE maximum number. Even the book acknowledges this in the introduction, stating, 'Essentially, your daily consumption of carbs is restricted to 30 - 50 Net grams per day, but others would advise you not to exceed 20g of carbs . . .'That said, there are indeed some foods that should be eliminated from a keto diet. Enter dairy. Although dairy can fit into your meals in the form of butter, low carb cheeses, heavy cream, etc., I'm pretty darn sure that milk and yoghurt are off-limits. However, there are two entire sections in this book featuring 'Yogurt-Based' and 'Milk-Based Keto-Approved' smoothies. According to the nutrition facts listed, at least four of these smoothies exceed the 20g-carb limit, each with 26.2g, 22.3g, and 23.4g, and 22.7g respectively. Now, the first three have a high fiber content, so potentially I guess this brings the net carbs down (anyone who has looked a bit more into keto will understand the whole fiber and net carbs thing). The fourth however, at 22.7g of carbohydrates, has only 2.1g of fiber to offset it. So if you're a strict keto-er who tries to stay under 20g a day, you've just maxed out.To be fair, I guess for those people who do well with 50g a day of carbs, I can see that the milk and yoghurt recipes would work. For people new to keto though, this is potentially misleading.But, as mentioned, the recipes do look tasty, and they can easily be adapted by switching out regular yoghurt and milk for low-carb alternatives (like coconut yoghurt, macadamia milk, etc.).3. This may seem like a silly point, but I have to say that, when the author lists keto-approved dairy products to incorporate into one's diet and includes mayonnaise, I feel a little bewildered and amused at the same time. Last I checked, mayonnaise was a condiment made with oil and eggs. It's not dairy. Again, that might seem silly to nitpick at, but taking everything else into account too, I'm a little inclined to question the author's credibility. Might just be me.All in all, the smoothies and shakes look good, and they still have a lot to offer. If you have any experience at all with adapting recipes, you'll get a lot of use out of this book.
Great book with lots of inspiration! The recipes are very detailed, easy to follow and helpful. I have tried some recipes of this book and all smoothies were delicious and healthy. I found this book easy to understand and it was well written and explained everything. I would also recommend this book to anyone trying to live a healthier lifestyle.
It has a lot of grammatical errors...........it is like a person with a 3rd grade education wrote it. No offense, it is bothersome that a grown adult didn't look through it to see if there are problems.
I like the recipes but I wouldn’t consider them Keto friendly. The majority of them are very high with total carbs for ONE smoothie/shake!
