Reading The Milk Lady of Bangalore by Shoba Narayan is like sitting down over a glass of milk while a good friend tells you an interesting and amusing tale of her life.Narayan grew up in India, was educated in the United States, and lived in the U.S. for many years before she and her family decided to return to Bangalore so their two daughters could experience the type of childhood they had lived. A modern apartment complex is their choice of home in Bangalore, while across the road is a military base where a woman named Sarala takes her cows each morning, selling her raw milk to any and all.At first, Narayan's interest in the milk lady is mild curiosity, then memories of drinking the raw milk and making yogurt pull her in, making her first a customer, and later a friend. Hearing the stories of their families, their shared love of food, and the vagaries of life made me smile, for we all want friends and community. When Narayan agrees to purchase a cow for Sarala, the road trips in search of just the right bovine is both heartwarming and humorous. I found the myriad beliefs about cows' special abilities, the power of cow urine and cow dung, and the celebrations that included the creatures quite enlightening. The descriptions of the homes, the countryside, the reverence for the cows, and the kindness of the people in the community made me desire a visit to the region. Now that I have been introduced to this book, I plan on looking for more of her writings. Though I don't remember where I heard about this book, I was so intrigued by it that I recommended it to our book club, and it was quite well received. I would love to meet Shoba Narayan and hear her talk about her writings sometime. I recommend this book to all, and I rate it a 4.5.

Narayan weaves a magical spell of India, cows, traditions and change into a single tale. India itself contains layer upon layer of myth and legend, rich fodder for any writer to pick through and the author takes full advantage of her source material while drawing characters very much of the present day. A beautiful story, beautifully told!

This is a great book! It was picked for our book club. This charming and funny story is also packed with interesting facts about cows. “Milk has become a minefield with respect to nutrition. Current medical literature blames milk for everything from iron deficiency to colic..most ancient cultures believe the opposite.” Shoba Narayan quotes so many fascinating studies in regards to the health benefits of not only cows milk, but everything down to their urine (check out the page on our insta story)! Would you use cow urine if it produced amazing health benefits?! Safe to say this book has me googling...would tyou commend!

I am going to India for the first time in a few months. This book gave me lovely invites into the country and it’s love for cows. Much of this I had no knowledge of. I found it very readable and entertaining. Thanks Ms Narayan!

I am from India and living in NY and gone back to India for visit. I completely relate to the story. I also enjoyed the research about the cows. Above all the writing is phenomenal. My husband who is Italian recommended this to me. I will tell my niece who is a reader about this book. Very typical Indian scenes and people

Shoba brought me fully into her mind and community via her exploration of the cow in Indian culture. I am looking forward to reading more of her gentle, evocative work.

Interesting and informative work.

Okay. So, I enjoy reading books about India, Indians, Indian-Americans, Indian food, history, and the society. I'll never get to India because I couldn't deal with the climate, so reading about the country, its people, and eating the food at restaurants here will have to suffice. I really liked Shoba Narayan's, "The Milk Lady of Bangalore: An Unexpected Adventure", which is a combination memoir and a look at a slice of life in today's India.Shoba Narayan was born in India, lived for many years in the United States, and moved back to India - Bangalore - with her husband and two daughters. They lived comfortably in Bangalore, with a deluxe apartment and staff. Shoba wrote articles and books and raised her children. One day she discovered the milk center across the street from her apartment and began an odyssey into the world of cows. The cow has a very special place in Hindu society. Adored and worshiped, the cow produces milk, dung, and urine, all used as practical products. Narayan befriends a "milk lady", Sarala, who, with her extended family keeps a herd of cows in the city and sells milk to the people in her neighborhood. And thus begins an engaging literary adventure as Shoba Narayan explores the place of cows in Indian society. She travels around the area - both alone and with Sarala - as she writes about such topics as the drinking of cow urine - for medicinal purposes - to how cow dung is used. She looks at the love many people feel for their cows and for the milk the cow produces. As I read back what I've written above, it seems as if the book is a snobbish view of the entitled Brahman woman and her lower class friend, Sarala. But it really isn't; Shoba and Sarala might not be evenly matched in money or caste, but they have developed a true friendship that goes beyond the ownership of a cow. The book is an upbeat look at a small part of Indian society and is a delightful read.
