Amazon.com Review

Nikolai is a boy who believes that if he can find the answers to his three questions, he will always know how to be a good person. His friends--a heron, a monkey, and a dog--try to help, but to no avail, so he asks Leo, the wise old turtle. "When is the best time to do things? Who is the most important one? What is the right thing to do?" Leo doesn't answer directly, but by the end of Nikolai's visit, the boy has discovered the answers himself. Award-winning illustrator Jon J Muth's lovely watercolors are the most appealing aspect of this book about compassion and living in the moment. The simple Zen-based profundity of the boy's philosophical exploration may escape young readers, but they will enjoy the tale of a child who, in doing good deeds (for a panda and her baby, no less!), finds inner peace. Muth based his story on a short story of the same title by Leo Tolstoy. (Ages 5 to 9) --Emilie Coulter

From Publishers Weekly

Muth (Come On, Rain!) recasts a short story by Tolstoy into picture-book format, substituting a boy and his animal friends for the czar and his human companions. Yearning to be a good person, Nikolai asks, "When is the best time to do things? Who is the most important one? What is the right thing to do?" Sonya the heron, Gogol the monkey and Pushkin the dog offer their opinions, but their answers do not satisfy Nikolai. He visits Leo, an old turtle who lives in the mountains. While there, he helps Leo with his garden and rescues an injured panda and her cub, and in so doing, finds the answers he seeks. As Leo explains, "There is only one important time, and that time is now. The most important one is always the one you are with. And the most important thing is to do good for the one who is standing at your side." Moral without being moralistic, the tale sends a simple and direct message unfreighted by pomp or pedantry. Muth's art is as carefully distilled as his prose. A series of misty, evocative watercolors in muted tones suggests the figures and their changing relationships to the landscape. Judicious flashes of color quicken the compositions, as in the red of Nikolai's kite (the kite, released at the end, takes on symbolic value). An afterword describes Tolstoy and his work. Ages 6-up. This is a beautiful book and gorgeously illustrated. I first read it to my Grade 3's and then realized it was just as beautiful a story for adults too. One thing I would recommend though is getting the hardback. I ordered the soft cover and the pages are coming away from the seams even with gentle use. I deducted a star because of this.

This book is just so beautiful and is so well-suited for my counseling students who have questions just as important as the Thor in this book. The author seems to truly understand children and how they think and question. The illustrations in this book are wonderful and calming even though the questions are less settling and oh so important. This is based on a shorter story. By Tolstoy and is as relevant now as ever. Just so very beautiful!

I loved sharing this with my elementary classroom. I appreciate the connection to great literature and meaningful conversation. Presented in a beautiful way that even 9 year olds found powerful.

I see that this book hardly needs another 5-star review, but as long as Amazon has got me started reviewing some recent purchases, let me say this: leaving aside the compassionate wisdom of the book's message, the artwork alone is enough to make it one of the most beautiful books I have ever seen.Ordinarily, I would suggest looking at the preview pages to see for yourself, but in this case, I'm not sure they really convey the vibrancy and impact of the physical book.I encourage buyers of this book to get the hardcover: I predict that it will be a keepsake you'll want to return to for years to come, well after the time your children have supposedly outgrown it.

I LOVE Jon MUTH, the illustration in his books is really a joy. We checked this book out of the library almost every other visit, because my daughter (2-3 yo) just LOVED it. So when it went on sale here, I got it, and I got about five more for friends. It's a fabulous book that talks about doing the right thing where you are and not worrying too much. Don't run off and do good deeds for anonymous people when the people you meet every day could use a little of your time and kindness. I'd love to see a book like this that incorporates a child with other children talking about these things, instead of a child with animals. I'm sure kids would like to talk to their friends about these same "questions".

I. Love. This. Book. I'm a therapist and I read this book for children, but most of all it answers the 3 most important questions in life. I keep it out for clients to read in lobby too. Very well written and illustrated.

We were having trouble at home being nice to one another, there seemed to be a lot of competiveness and arguing. My copy of Three Questions came in the mail, and had everyone take a few minutes time out to sit in the living room and listen.Nikolai would like to know, What is the most important time? Who is the most important? and What is the most important thing to do?Nikolai's friends try to give him answers. Nikolai thinks his friends are giving it their best answer but these answers don't feel right. He seeks the counsel of the old Turtle - Leo. When Nikolai arrives Leo is digging for his garden, and since it is much easier for a boy to dig than for a turtle, Nikolai digs Leo's garden. Just as he finishes digging a large storm moves in and Nikolai can hear the cries of a female bear who has been injured by a falling tree. After Nikolai rescues the bear she cries for her baby and Nikolai goes back into the storm to find the baby. He rescues the baby as well. After the storm, Nikolai's friends come to find him and Nikolai asks Leo again his questions. The most important time is Now. The most important person is the One you are With. The most important thing to do is to Do Good for the One who is Standing by Your Side. The storm in our house ended. These illustrations are beautiful and peaceful watercolors. The story helps children to understand a very important lesson. It helped me to understand an important lesson. Now when we are arguing, we stop, what is the most important time - Now. Who is the most important person - the one you are with. What is the most important thing to do - to do good for the one who is standing by your side. Are we following these simple rules, no. There may always be little disagreements, but I think this is a lovely foundation for everyone.Ages 4-8 is appropriate, your 4 or 5 year old will certainly enjoy the story. I beleive that your 6 year old and up will understand the concepts better, but it never hurts to start early.

I bought this book for each of my kids as our family was adjusting to divorce. While I think it could be helpful to any child from preschool age to adolescence (even adults), I found it helpful during a time when my 6-year-old seemed to struggle with "who do I love more?," "which house is better?," and "when do I have more fun?" The message in this book answers those questions indirectly by letting her (and her younger brother) know that it's ok to not choose a favorite. We love the humor and I appreciate how a child is both in need of help and a rescuer. I think it's empowering for children on many levels and couldn't recommend it more.
