Review
“An important new book…[It] attempts to do for blockchain what the likes of Laurence Lessig and Tim Wu did for the Internet and cyberspace―explain how a new technology will upend the current legal and social order…A fine, deeply-researched book that can be expected to show up on law school syllabi for years to come…Blockchain and the Law is not just a theoretical guide. It’s also a moral one.â€â€•Jeff John Roberts, Fortune“Blockchain and the Law perfectly links technical understanding with practical and legal implications. Blockchains will matter crucially; this book, beautifully and clearly written for a wide audience, powerfully demonstrates how.â€â€•Lawrence Lessig, Harvard Law School“Useful to an educated readership…If you…don’t ‘get’ crypto, this is the book-length treatment for you. It sees merit and potential in crypto, without buying into any particular claim just for the sake of hype.â€â€•Tyler Cowen, Marginal Revolution“De Filippi and Wright stress that because blockchain is essentially autonomous, it is inflexible, which leaves it vulnerable, once it has been set in motion, to the sort of unforeseen consequences that laws and regulations are best able to address.â€â€•James Ryerson, New York Times Book Review“De Filippi and Wright offer neither a jeremiad nor a gospel; unlike the breathlessness that pervades much writing on blockchain technology, they stick to sensibleness and sobriety.â€â€•Nathan Schneider, America“Explores the implications of the technology in its broadest sense, positioning it in context of the evolution of the internet, and the development of artificial intelligence and autonomous systems which are continually touching more areas of our daily lives…A fascinating and comprehensive read that poses many questions we should debate and settle before blockchain technology becomes ubiquitous.â€â€•Breaker“At long last―a deeply researched, thoughtful, and measured analysis of blockchain technology and the policies that could help us harvest its opportunities and avoid its pitfalls. Blockchain and the Law should be required reading for anyone serious about understanding this major emerging element of our technological ecosystem.â€â€•Yochai Benkler, author of The Wealth of Networks“A well-written and comprehensive book that cuts through the blockchain hype. It not only highlights the powers and limitations of blockchain technology, but solidly grounds it in a larger social and legal context.â€â€•Bruce Schneier, author of Data and Goliath“If you are looking to understand the intricacies of the relationship between the law and blockchain technology, then this book should be on your list…[It] makes it clear that regulators must redefine their approach because restrictive regulations will stifle the growth of the industry.â€â€•Alexander Lielacher, BTCManager

There are a lot of books - many of them self-published - about the blockchain and even some about legal aspects of the blockchain. However, if you want real information from people who know what they are talking about THIS IS THE SOURCE TO GO TO. I have bought several other works before. They have meanwhile been donated to the recycling bin. Don't waste your money on books that no decent publisher would publish and that are giving you blabla in font 16 on 100 pages. These guys can be trusted and it is no surprise that Harvard University Press thought so too. (Full disclosure: I don't know the authors and I am not working in any way for HarvardUP. I am a law professor, however, and I hate to spend my money and shelf space on books by wannabe experts that are merely riding a wave by quickly putting together some platitudes about a topic many people are seeking more information on.)
I purchased this looking for a deeper legal understanding of blockchains. For the first 170 pages, this read more like Nathaniel Popper's _Digital Gold_, giving the historical narrative of cryptocurrencies, and explaining what the blockchain is, and why it exists. If you ware looking for a book on the regulatory considerations in defending your blockchain product from the SEC and state corporation commissions, this book doesn't really get into that.
The book touches on a broad range of themes relating to the block chain technology and, as such, is a useful introduction to the topic. It also provides a compendium of media sources and a few journal articles (mostly relating to law). However, you have to look elsewhere to get real insights into what blockchain can or cannot do. This is because the authors do not explain precisely what blockchain is and how it’s different from more traditional ledger technologies. Their descriptions of blockchain applications are rather superficial, and often read like a cut-and-paste job. They also take at face value the claims of blockchain’s capabilities. Other than pointing out some of the privacy and legal issues, the authors don’t evaluate the value added of blockchain applications. The authors cite a number of initiatives and projects and fail to mention that there are few successful blockchain commercial applications. Truth is, most applications use blockchain for marketing reasons, just like in the dot com bubble days, companies would add dot com to their names so their stock price would go up.
Great book! This is the most comprehensive and best-written publication on the legal dimension of blockchain to date. Incredibly well researched with lots of attention to detail and nuance. Definitely worth reading.
Recommend by a friend during a party. Imaging blockchain discussion at a party. The conversation went from investment to hack and then to this recommedation of the book and how possible goverment restriction and smart contract slowdown could possibly effect..Again, thought provoking.
This book is awesome. The most authoritative book on blockchain technology that I've read. It takes a broad view of how blockchain might fit into society today, soon, and well into the future. Extremely well written, highly recommended!
Excelent book! Very useful for anyone getting started with blockchain.
I was expecting thought out methods by which governments can regulate Blockchain and there was none. Moreover, it gave a superficial treatment of Blockchain technology. Let us review the methods of regulation offered and criticize it:1. ISP: require internet service providers to censor and reject Blockchain transactions.Solution: all internet traffic will be encrypted.2. Infomediaries: require search engines (Google) and social media (Facebook) to censor contents.Solution: there are blockchain companies decentralizing such services.3. Exchanges: make crypto to fiat exchanges track and ban users.Solution: there is already a decentralized exchange that offers such a service.4. Mining pools: requires mining pools to censor transactions.Solution: Cryptocurrencies that offer anonymity and decentralize mining will be adopted.Users: ban users from engaging in Blockchain activities.Solution: Good luck, people can be anonymous on the internet.Developers: ban developers from creating code.Solution: you cannot ban thought. Many people can interact to create code anonymously on the internet including Satoshi Nakamoto the creator of Bitcoin.
