I want to love this, and there are so few similar books. But the ending I just...I can't. I found the book fine but not incredible until then, but "Look, a female bunny for your very own as your reward! Go catch her!" It isn't sweet, it's obnoxious. If she was going to be there, she needed to be in the entire book (and that would have been good), but dropping her in as a reward for the hero, without any personality or agency or say on her part? I cannot get behind that.
I appreciate the chance to share alternative tales for holidays. The 3rd person perspective of the bunny is a cute touch. I wish the book was focused more on the folklore rather than specific, modern coven-based practices. The narrow duo-theistic traditional view caused the 3 star review. If that's what you're looking for you may think it worth 5.
The rhyming format was insipid, amateurish, and totally insisted upon itself. I had to paraphrase so as not to bore the life out of my kids or myself when I read it to them because it just dragged on and on and on and on... cute idea, poor writing. Such a bummer.
I bought this as a Yule gift for my almost 3 yr old granddaughters. Their father is Wiccan so we try and find ways every year to incorporate his beliefs into the family's Christmas traditions. My granddaughters love this book, and I'm now looking into buying other books about pagan traditions by this author.
I bought this book for my nephew for yule. It has become a family tradition to read each of the stories to celebrate the turning of the wheel of the year. The stories are sweet and very charming. Rupert is sure to delight readers of all ages.
In my experience, it is incredibly difficult to find resources for Pagan families. This activity book helps fill that gap. I hope that more activity books and coloring books are published in this series.
I brought this for my girls (2 & 6) hoping that it would give them a better idea of the holidays and where the traditions came from. Although some of the stories had details, they only made up a small amount of the story. I was disappointed and left with many unanswered questions and only a vague explanation of the holidays. My two year old liked the pictures and the rabbit narrator (can't expect more than that based on her age). My 6 year old found the back and forth between the characters distracting and couldn't follow the story or understand why I was reading it until I got to the point of each story (where she recognized the traditions). Basically, it is ok if you want a very general overview and don't want to get too involved with the holidays. I'm still looking for a good book for my kids though, this doesn't cut it.
I really like the idea of this book, and the artwork is beautiful, however the rhyming scheme is a little clunky. The syllables don't sync up in several places causing an awkwardness in the rhymes, BUT, don't let that make you decide not to get this book. The stories are wonderful, and let's face it, there are next to no pagan children's books.
