Very easy to read and use. Love the layout and design and the very laid back approach to drawing. Would recommend to anyone kinda serious about the art form.

Did not meet expectations. Had to Google how to use charcoal.

"Just for Fun: Drawing" is an art book to help beginners learn how to draw. It combined text describing what to do and why you do it with simple, step-by-step drawings. This allows the person to learn how to draw cats in general, for example, not just the pose shown in the book.I'd recommend this as a good beginner artist book for tweens and teens (or older). It's done in a style that should keep a younger person interested, but it also taught some basics found in adult drawing books. So we learn how to draw basic shapes--in perspective--and how to add simple texture and shading. The book began by describing what drawing tools to use, and you can start out with as little as a common pencil and a sheet of computer paper. Other tools were described, but you don't have to start fancy. We then get the step-by-step "add a circle here and here, combine the shapes, add some texture" instructions. These usually involved four steps that were easy to understand and weren't complex to draw. We're taught to draw animals like cats, big cats, dogs, wolves, rabbits, horses, cow, and birds. There were brief descriptions on how to draw people standing and in motion, the parts of the body, and clothing. And we learn to draw nature in part (like a tree, flower, or water) or as a whole landscape drawing. The finished drawings should look recognizable without being complex to draw.I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

This is a great drawing book. It starts with the basics of supplies needed and gives you step by step instructions that lead you to your own masterpiece. It is so freeing to have some direction and guidance and then make it your own by adding things here and there. I think nature is my favorite but with the nature I can add some wildlife that she also teaches and maybe a person or building off in the distance. The skies the limit and it’s all up to you!I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Considering the high reader review's of Lise Herzog's Just for Fun: Drawing, I chose to take a look at the book as one of a small library of beginner art books for my 5th grade granddaughter's Christmas present. I was very impressed with the simple and easy to follow step-by-step instructions so much that I practiced drawing before wrapping it up. You will find it a great stepping stone in learning to create artistic drawings. Full Disclosure: I was allowed to read a copy of this book for free as a member of NetGalley in exchange for my unbiased review. The opinions I have expressed are my own and I was not influenced to give a positive review.

I have been using this book for my middle school art students at a private school, and the response from them has been extremely positive. In short, they have pretty much been eating it up, and I had to order more copies for my classroom because the one I was bringing from my own library wasn't enough. The steps are nicely broken down from simple shapes to more complex details, and I'm seeing it give students the opportunity to achieve more than some of them even realized they could do. I feel like the confidence boost they get from being able to produce a good result is great for making them want to draw more, and it's starting to train their eye a bit to look for simple shapes, which will become a more and more important skill the deeper they go into the more complicated aspects of drawing and painting. One note, just for the context of a classroom use, I did draw just a little bit over the final versions in the step by step male and female figures on pages 62 and 63. The original drawings are definitely NOT graphic, and I personally have no problems with anatomy drawing or figure drawing as such, but there are still *just* enough body features shown on those pages that my principal and I both felt it would be best to edit it slightly in the context of making the book available to a large (and varyingly mature) group of middle schoolers. I simply added a pair of shorts for the male figure and a leotard for the female figure. Everything else in the book on drawing people basically uses a manakin or doll-like form that I feel completely comfortable about handing out in a class full of kids from a variety of backgrounds. Again, I definitely wouldn't say there was anything wrong with those two pages, it just worked better in my case to do as I did to avoid the unnecessary possibility of a few 6th graders snickering at it.

Living objects have always a problem for me and other than a few caricature-like efforts my dogs, horses, etc. needed help dreadfully.
